what gen z really thinks of dating apps
Summary
A client asked us to understand how Gen Z uses dating apps, how they see them, and what actually works to meet someone.
Method
GenSight, our listening technology, analysed 243,392 mentions over three months, from March 9 to June 9, 2026: 235,032 on Reddit and 8,360 on Discord. The report answered three questions: how Gen Z uses the apps, which approach works, and what first message to send.
What we found
Apps in daily use, and real fatigue
Gen Z is past the discovery phase: they use these apps every day. But nearly one user in five talks about quitting or scepticism. Ghosting is the number one obstacle, with 613 mentions, and “dating burnout” reaches 97.2% negative mentions.
Authenticity beats technique
The approaches people praise aren’t tricks: “be direct” gets 62.7% positive mentions, “be authentic” 57%. On the other hand, writing messages with ChatGPT is widely rejected: 623 mentions, 49% of them negative.
A clear ranking between apps
Hinge is judged better than Tinder 199 times for a serious relationship. Tinder gathers the complaints: fake profiles, bots, hookup culture. For the community the ranking is clear: Hinge, then Bumble, then Tinder.
Real life makes a comeback
Coffee is the most cited first date (202 mentions), and a personalised first message remains the best opener (57.7% positive mentions). Meeting offline (432 mentions) and speed dating (151) are rising as alternatives.
